App: 13cms long The first animals were brought to the Mediterranean region as early as 4,000 years ago. The peacock originated on the Indian subcontinent. It lived mostly in hilly areas there, particularly those near water. The peacock, or, more correctly, the blue peafowl, belongs to the pheasant family. It is thus also a gamefowl. The cocks especially are believed to be one of man’s oldest decorative birds, due to their striking form. The peacock is willingly allowed to run free in many parks, because it is faithful to its habitat. The animal has well-developed senses of smell and hearing, and is therefore very vigilant. The peacock gives other animals early warning of danger with a loud cry. And it really does often give its characteristic cry before storms.
