Anurognathus (An-yoor-og-nath-us), a small pterosaur known from the Late Jurassic of Germany.  Named and scientifically described in 1923, this remarkable flying reptile had a dense covering of hair-like pycnofibres that may have given its body a furry appearance.

It had a short, broad skull with a wide mouth lined with numerous, pin-like teeth.  Anurognathus probably preyed on insects and other small invertebrates.  Its compact wings and short tail would have made it highly manoeuvrable, adaptations that may have helped it pursue and catch insects in flight.

The proportionately enormous eyes suggest that Anurognathus may have been active in low-light conditions or perhaps at night.  In some respects, its lifestyle may have resembled that of a modern insect-eating bat.

Fossil evidence indicates the presence of tufts of pycnofibres along the trailing edges of the wing tips.  It has been suggested that these structures could have helped reduce noise generated during flight, allowing Anurognathus to approach its prey silently.

The CollectA Deluxe Anurognathus is a 1:1 scale model, indicating that this new pterosaur figure is approximately life-size.
