"Which brands can I mix with my Schleich Horse collection?"

Back in 2016, I wrote a blog comparing brands of model horses. While a lot of that information is still relevant today, the blog itself has become dated, and I wanted to bring an updated version that covers even more of our range with all new photos to give you a clear picture on what we now offer - 10 years later!

Today, we're diving deep into the world of model horse collections. We are looking at different brands of model horses, as well as riders, and how you can mix the brands we have here together.

What brands of horses do you have?

Here at MiniZoo, we stock the following model horse brands: Schleich, CollectA, Papo, Mojo, Bullyland, Safari Ltd and Breyer.

All these brands offer a range of horse figurines, while only some brands include riders, saddles, and pre-saddled horses in their range. Let's take a closer look:

Schleich offers: Horses, Pre-Saddled horses, Horse and Rider sets and Riders.

CollectA offers: Horses, Single Riders, Saddles, Horse and Rider Sets and Deluxe 1:12 Scale Horses.

Papo offers: Horses, Pre-Saddled Horses, Riders and Horse and Rider Sets.

Bullyland offers: Horses, Pre-Saddled Horses and Riders.

Safari Ltd offers: Horses, as well as 2 x Horse and Rider sets.

(Rider sets were not available to be pictured at the time of this blog.)

Breyer offers model horses in different scales, however none of these mix with our other brands, so they have been purposefully left out of the remainder of this blog. The image below shows a Traditional sized Breyer model (1:9 scale), with a Deluxe CollectA model (1:12 scale).Not pictured:

Mojo offers a range of horses only, which will be shown in more photos in this blog. 

Are these brands similar in size?

Now that we've looked at each brand, let's see if we can, or if we should, mix them together! Below are photos of our brands side by side, featuring Friesian Horses, Tinker Horses, and a general comparison of brown horses. The brown horse comparison below is especially useful if you're aiming for a more natural or RUSTIC themed collection. I'll leave them here and let you decide if mixing brands is right for your collection.When it comes to foals, some brands don't offer much and therefore there isn't a lot of choice in mixing the brands together. In general, I would recommend matching the same brand of foal with the adult horse you have chosen. As shown below, most foals are a similar size, except for CollectA, which are usually larger than other brands of foals.

What horse riders do you have?

Out of the brands shown above, only a few offer riders for their horses. These brands include Schleich, CollectA, Papo and Bullyland.

CollectA, Papo and Bullyland all sell their riders individually. You can no longer purchase Schleich riders (or saddles) on their own. Schleich now only makes their riders available in playsets. If you are after the new articulated riders, but don't wish to purchase the larger playsets, you can secure the people figurines from Pocket Playsets, which are a much more affordable option and include some fun bonus pieces too. 

Let's have a look at each brand of rider:As shown above, the CollectA and new Schleich riders are articulated, meaning you can move their legs and arms (and in CollectA's case, the head and torso too), so they can stand on their own, as well as sit on horses. This is great for play, but may not be required if you like to display your riders on their horses permanently. For a permanent sitting option, Papo and/or Bullyland models would be the way to go. I also included a retired Schleich rider in this photo to show the difference between old Schleich riders and new Schleich riders. If you prefer the older style, Papo riders are very similar and a good alternative to the new Schleich versions.

Schleich and CollectA both offer male and female riders, while other brands only offer female riders.

Can I mix riders with different brands of horses?

All of the riders shown above can fit on the brands of horses that we've been mentioning in this blog. However, you will need to use the right riders with the right saddle if you are after a perfect fit.

CollectA offers a saddle individually, while Papo and Bullyland do not. Papo and Bullyland only offer pre-saddled horses for their riders, but don't worry! You can use these riders on Schleich or CollectA saddles, too. See combinations below.

Conclusion:

✅ Mix brands of horses together! Don't let a different brand name scare you off adding a model that you love to your collection.

✅ Add riders and saddles to your collection to expand play and diorama opportunities.

The mystical world of Bayala is expanding with an impressive range of new unicorns, magical creatures and even dinosaurs! If Bayala makes you think all things pretty, magical and unique, you won't be disappointed!

Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures

Prehistoric fans will enjoy the scientific accuracy of the new Spinosaurus, the functionality of the Triceratops (with moving head!) and of course, the launch of new Ice Age figures: the Woolly Mammoth and Smilodon.

New Playsets

While we've noticed Schleich is focusing more on individual models this year, we do have some exciting new playsets coming in 2026.

• The big highlight for us is the Puppy and Cat playsets, each of which are painted in trending colours, ensuring they'll fit right into any existing playroom or dollhouse setup.
• We also see the launch of new Discovery Sets! The first packs are Insects and Sealife. Each set will come with a magnifying glass, so your littles can explore the details of the figurines and discover what's so special about each creature!

More Pocket Sets – Big Fun in Small Packages!

Last year, Schleich launched small play packs that include people figurines, an animal and accessories, making it easier to build collections without needing a full playset. In 2026, we'll see this range expand further, branching into other categories such as Wild Life and Bayala!

Eldrador

The world of Eldrador is heating up with budget-friendly entry-level creatures like the Shadow Lemur and Stone Toad, along with bigger, standout pieces with functionality like the Rock Dragon and the Ice Crab (with working pincers!).

Wizarding World 

Harry Potter fans will be thrilled with the new additions coming this year. We're seeing more unique characters in toy form, such as Neville with Mandrake and the Basilisk. Exclusive Models - coming to Australia!

2026 is a very exciting year for Schleich collectors in Australia, with MiniZoo being selected as an exclusive distributor for Schleich Limited edition items! This nostalgic, beautifully designed wooden barn brings a more traditional feel to farm play in a beautiful red colour, with white trims and a raw wooden roof. The Schleich Retro Barn has a fold-out design with a handy built-in carry handle on the roof. It is quite heavy though, so not as easy for little ones to move around. This wooden Schleich barn comes as is, so no assembly is required! It also comes with white wooden fence pieces.

The Schleich Retro Barn fits Schleich and CollectA animal figurines perfectly, but given its open space and wooden make, it also works brilliantly with wooden farm animals like Holztiger or Tender Leaf Toys!

5. Schleich Stable (Large Farm or Red Barn)

These are the classic Schleich barn playsets! Designed with the signature Schleich detail and realism, both the Large Farm (yellow) and Red Barn are fully kitted out with animals, people, hay, feeding accessories, and more, so you don't need an existing collection to get straight into play! These sets do, however, need to be put together before play, so if you're gifting to a loved one, it may be best to set it up first!

The Schleich plastic stables are perfect for children who love immersive farm play because the sets include everything you need in one box. Plus, they’re modular, so they can be expanded with other Schleich farm stables, such as the Goat Stable or Horse Box, for a bigger layout down the track.

6. Schleich Large Farm House - Retired Item!

If you want something incredibly fun for extended imaginative play, the Schleich Large Farm House is a dream gift.  It’s part barn, part farmhouse, combining a home setting with an open barn area, hay loft, fences and more. It includes 2 people figurines, furniture, a few animals and classic Schleich accessories. Like the other plastic Schleich barns, the Farm House needs to be assembled before play.

This set has now been retired by Schleich, so it won't be around for much longer!

7. Schleich Open Stable (Horse Club)

This new Schleich stable has Horse Club charm written all over it, combining white walls with soft blue windowsills and a pink roof. It’s designed like a carry case with a top handle, and includes a rider, horse, foal and accessories. Like other plastic Schleich stables, this needs assembling before play, but it's not as challenging to put together as the others, so you could gift it straight from the box.

As the name suggests, the Schleich Horse Club Open Stable can open up and fold back neatly for storage or travel. This would be the number one choice for horse-obsessed kids who take their model horses everywhere. It has enough room inside for up to 6 model horse figurines!

Still Not Sure Which Barn to Choose? Let's break it down:

Barns We Don’t Recommend for Schleich & CollectA Sized Farm Animal Figurines

If you look up “barn” on our website, you’ll find that we also stock a range of Breyer-branded barns too. The Breyer sizes differ significantly from our standard range of figurines, with the Stablemates being smaller and the Freedom and Traditional sizes being a lot larger. The Breyer barns are sized specifically for Breyer horses, so we don’t recommend them for use with your MiniZoo farm figurines from major brands like Schleich, CollectA or Papo.

If you don’t have room for a full wall shelf, opt for smaller display shelves and rotate your collection regularly. When there's no space to keep them on display, or if they're out of the toy rotation, the best solution is to dedicate space in a cupboard or on a sturdy shelf for a tub to hold these in. Use clear storage containers—available at most craft stores—to hold smaller pieces as mentioned above. The transparent design makes it easy to see what’s inside and find exactly what you need. Place these containers inside a larger tub that fits neatly in your cupboard, then add the bulkier playset items to the same tub. Similarities between Schleich and CollectA

Sizing

The sizing between the two brands is comparable with all wildlife, sealife and farm figurines, so you can seamlessly mix between brands with ease. One exception is the Dinosaurs. Schleich dinosaurs are larger than the regular CollectA dinosaurs, which reflects the pricing difference, however, the deluxe range of CollectA dinosaurs is a lot larger, and can work well with the Schleich dinosaurs.

Quality

The quality of Schleich and CollectA is comparable as both brands make their products from the same non-toxic PVC materials. All figures are also hand painted, which means that no two will be exactly the same, just like the real animals! It also means that the painters can get every detail painted with precision, including eyes and marks like stripes and spots. There may be paint variations between batches and this can make collecting even more exciting! Depending on your use of the figures, some wear may be noticed over time with both brands. If used in water play, sensory activities or in rough play, paint fading or scratches may occur, as is with any toys when they’re in small hands.

Differences between Schleich and CollectA

Details

Both Schleich and CollectA produce highly detailed animal toys for kids. CollectA’s newer releases are especially realistic, making them perfect for collectors too. In recent years, we've seen the styling of Schleich change with new owners taking over the company. If you're familiar with older Schleich models, you might find their recent releases to be more colourful, with more expression in their faces. The details are not quite as intricate as they used to be in some models. If you're a fan of older Schleich, we suggest delving into the world of CollectA. CollectA keeps realism and detail as their main focus, so all models released up to date look true-to-life, which can be more appealing for educators and collectors.

Variety

While the Schleich range is impressive, CollectA have a lot more figurines available in their wild, farm and dinosaur collections. However, that doesn't mean CollectA has more variety overall. While a couple of unicorns can be found in CollectA’s range, there are no other mythical or magical creatures, so if you want to expand into these realms, Schleich offers fairies, mermaids, unicorns, dragons, monsters and more in the Bayala and Eldrador play worlds.

Size Differences

As mentioned earlier, the sizing is comparable between the two brands for the majority of their figurines, however, CollectA also offer a few different sizes. Deluxe Horses in 1:12 Scale and Deluxe Dinosaurs are available from CollectA, and these are larger than the standard size. CollectA also offers Mini Tubes which are smaller figurines, suitable for activities and sensory play plays.

Price Differences

Both brands are priced well in the Australian market for quality and long-lasting animal toys, but of the two brands, CollectA is the more affordable option.

Name Stamps

On the bottom of your branded animal figures you will find a stamp with some information about the product. Both Schleich and CollectA have their brand stamp on their figurines. CollectA figures also have the name of the animal stamped onto them, so you can see which figure is the Minke Whale and which is the Blainvilles Beaked Whale! It's also super handy for all the different dinosaurs too! This feature carries throughout the entire CollectA range, including the miniature tube figurines.

Starter Sets, Play Sets and Accessories

Choosing where to start can be overwhelmng for some, and a ready-made starter set might just be what you need. CollectA offers Gift Sets in a variety of themes at a great price point, so you can start with sealife, wildlife, farm or dinosaurs, and then expand on your collection with the individual models later on. Schleich only offer two starter sets: one wild, and one farm.

Schleich, on the other hand, offers various large playsets within their many categories. From horse stables and chicken coops to helicopters and dino temples, there are playsets designed to capture little imaginations and provide extra play value, no matter what their interest is in!

While CollectA offer some individual accessories, their range doesn’t include such large play sets. CollectA specialises in individual items that you can buy separately, and then build your own miniature worlds with. Such accessories available in the CollectA range include trees, fences, hay bales and riders that aren't available individually from Schleich.

New Releases and Retired Items

Both Schleich and CollectA release new items every year, replenishing their range and improving their detail and accuracy. Every year, Schleich also discontinues items from their range. This can mean that particular animals can be harder to come by as Schleich often retire models without recreating them. The value of Schleich items can increase once they are retired, so this may be a factor when you're choosing your animals. As long as they are still in good condition, you will be able to sell them on later to Schleich collectors.

While CollectA also discontinues some models, its not as often as Schleich. CollectA still have figures from when they first began (some from 20 years ago) and so, while their newer releases have improved, they do still keep their older models in their range, and these don’t always match their current level of detail.

So... Schleich or CollectA?

You want to know the bottom line? It may not help.. choose both! We recommend mixing both brands together to make your animal collection the best it can be. Knowing that the sizing is comparable between these two brands, you can comfortably choose which animal you like from either brand and build your collection into something that YOU love, no matter which brands are included.
