In the winter, it frequents lower locations than in the summer. It will sometimes come down to graze on Alpine meadows in the summer as well, when it will again seek the heights at night. An ibex herd can consist of ten to twenty females and young animals. Parallel to this are the not yet fully grown bucks, the so-called less-stable bachelor herd, and the old bucks living alone. During the breeding season in December and January, the bucks seek out the females and try to assert control over their herd. This leads to fights between the rival bucks. The buck then remains with the herd over the winter and leaves it again in the spring. After five or six months, the kids are born in May or June. A kid can walk from its first day and will be suckled by the mother for one year.
