The ocean inhabitant Elasmosaurus populated the seas in North America and Asia. With a length of 14 metres, it was the longest representative among the plesiosaurs. Its highly flexible neck was 8 m long and consisted of 75 vertebrae. It had four long, paddle-like fins, a small head and sharp teeth with which it hunted fish. Since its neck was in the way while swimming under water, some paleontologists suspect that it swam on the surface and kept its neck out of the water. Then, at the appropriate moment it came down on its prey with a whip-like motion.
